HEADACHE
Dr. Gene: My name is Dr. Gene and I have the privilege of co- hosting the
Dr. Marc Darrow show with
Dr. Darrow.
Dr. Darrow is a board certified physiatrist, he specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation. He is the medical director of Joint Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Center in West Los Angeles.
Dr. Darrow's focus of his practice is on musculo-skeletal injury. He is terrific in pain management. As an avid sports enthusiast, Dr. Darrow discovered
Prolotherapy
after an injury on the golf course which caused him to suffer the kind of chronic pain that afflicts millions of Americans. And a skeptical Dr. Darrow became a believer in the therapeutic healing powers of Prolotherapy
and
trigger point injections, only after one treatment, since then he has devoted his practice to
Prolotherapy, a little known natural therapy that is really revolutionizing the way we treat chronic pain. As always Dr. Darrow it is a pleasure talking to you this Saturday morning.
Dr. Darrow: Always a pleasure Dr. Gene!
Dr. Gene: We send you a lot of patients from my area and I can not begin to tell you of the smiles we see on their faces when they can go off of pain pills, but I think before we start I want to mention that Prolotherapy
is so useful for so many types of musculo-skeletal pain and I would like to go over some of these pains-arthritis,
back pain, neck pain, Fibromyalgia, sports injuries for those weekend warriors.
Whiplash injuries,
carpal
tunnel syndrome, degenerative or herniated discs, TMJ, sciatica,
headaches and
migraines.
How can this one therapy work for so many things?
Dr. Darrow: Well that is a great point, it does so because Prolotherapy
is an injection technique with a mild dextrose solution that actually helps rejuvenate the body and stimulates the growth of more
collagen. Collagen is the major protein in all animals, it is the structural protein of the stuff that holds us together.
The type 2 collagen, there are maybe a dozen different types, the type 2 collagen is focused in our
ligaments and our joints, the joint capsule, the tendons, around the muscles, the facia. So when we have musculo-skeletal injury, this is really the best way to handle it. We like to take the surgery out of pain, in other words we try to avoid surgery whenever possible.
I have a great story to tell you, we had someone come in today who had a little tingling from her neck down to arms down to her fingers. And when I palpitated, or pressed down on her neck, she was very, very sore, right around the bones in the back, what we call the spinous process, the back of the vertebrae, and then on the sides of those, down to what we call the transverse process, the area where the bones attach to the muscles to move the neck. She scheduled for surgery next Tuesday, thank goodness I was able to talk her out of it because she didn't need surgery for that.
But listen to this, she says, "I would be so embarrassed to call my doctor to postpone the surgery."
Dr. Gene: Some e-mails are coming in, because I mentioned the word headache. Probably the most common type of non-vascular headache is the tension headache.
Dr. Darrow: Almost 80% of the population has had a tension type headache in the last year.
Dr.Gene: Would Prolotherapy
help that?
Dr. Darrow: Absolutely, now there is never a guarantee. But we find that most of these tension type headaches come from a musculo-skeletal issue, either at the back of the bottom of the head or from the muscles that move the head backwards and sideways. It is like a sprain there, same thing with back pain, people who have herniated discs, it is not necessarily the disc that is causing the pain, it is usually a sprain of the ligaments, the same thing with headaches, most of them come from somewhere, either from the rhomboid or trapezius muscles, or up to the neck where the muscles attach to the neck, some of them come from the greater occipital nerve that runs the back of the head that can be impacted in some way from some muscles.
